A&BC Chewing Gum (Scottish)
Footballers

A set of 66 coloured photograph cards issued in pairs, but most often seen as singles. There are 42 different individual footballers to collect, although they were issued as a number of different 'pairs' - each footballer may therefore appear on more than one paired card. There are 55 known paired card combinations.

There are also 12 paired cards (24 individual cards) which each depict part of a photograph of the Celtic team group - these cards are very rare.

Number in set: 67 paired cards, or 66 individual cards

Carrs Biscuits
Sports Soccer Card Series

Excellent quality cards from this biscuit company. Made from strong card they are 19 x 7.5cm. They do not mention Carrs on the cards, only the words 'Sports Soccer card series'. I'm not sure how they were issued. If you know anything more please email me here.

Perhaps they were not a success, perhaps too big or unusual for most boys. It was also not clear what you did with them, stuck them in an album or onto a wall chart? Despite the ongoing fortunes of Carrs, they didn't venture into football cards again after this, which is perhaps a pity.

These cards are now collectable, but only among the more discerning collectors, including those who must have one of each of the players for their favourite club. They don't come up for sale very often, and when they do can fetch high prices if in excellent condition.

FKS Publishers
The Wonderful World of Soccer Stars 1967/68

This rarest of all FKS football albums and stickers. The stickers are readily identifiable through the backs which have the player name and club, but no other printing including no number. The album has the same cover as the 1968/69 album, and many of the stickers have the same images as the 1968/69 set. The stickers do not indicate that they should only be stuck at the top, so most were stuck completely down in albums. There was no writing in the space for each sticker in the albums, so nothing much was lost except that you won't find many of these stickers 'ex-album'. The album, and therefore the stickers, are full of errors and omissions e.g. surnames only, misspellings etc. Click to view an article on the 1967/68 packet. Album price 3s 6d.

Ty-Phoo
International Football Stars, 1st series

The cards were able to be cut from the side of the tea packets. The quality of the cards therefore depends a lot on the person who cut them out, since this dictates how much of the packet was included, and how neat the borders will be. Some people cut them out with the accompanying text, while others cut around the picture only.

International Football Stars, 1st series, Colour pictures

If you collected any 12 of the tea packet cards you could send them away to Typhoo Tea and obtain a 10" x 8" colour photo of your favourite player, 'suitable for framing'.

One interesting aspect of the Colour Pictures set is the existence of two versions of the Derek Dougan card, one for Leicester City and the other for Wolverhampton Wanderers. Dougan was transferred from Leicester to Wolves in March 1967. The text on the Leicester card reads exactly the same as the Wolves version of the card, except that they have added in the transfer details i.e. ‘Aston Villa and Peterborough’ has become ‘Aston Villa, Peterborough and Leicester City’. This indicates that the set was produced in February/March/April 1967. The Leicester City version of this card, including a photo of Dougan in Leicester kit, is very rare and hence very collectable.

This website does not know whether the Leicester City version of the Dougan card was ever sent to the public. We can perhaps assume one of two things (1) the Leicester card was produced and sent out amongst the earliest to those who requested it, and then replaced by the Wolves card or (2) the Leicester card was never issued as the Wolves card was always sent out.

The Gordon Banks card in this set has an asterisk against the team name and a note at the end of the text which says ‘Since transferred in April 1967 to Stoke City’, which confirms that the cards were designed in early 1967. Bank's transfer was not reflected on the packet issues of this card.
